Today I’ll show you the 7 best keto items at Whole Foods Market. I’ll also show you which items you absolutely should buy organic and which ones you can save some money by buying conventionally grown.
This is part 2 of my 5 part series that I’m doing on the best places to shop keto. You can check out part 1 of my series, 3 best keto snacks at Target and one you should avoid, here.
The best keto item at Whole Foods in their meat selection is their organic 100% grassfed ground beef. This is basically the best ground beef you can get.
I use ground beef all the time for tacos, beef stir-fry, and even beef stew.
When it comes to beef, clean is very important because conventional beef contains much more trace chemicals, hormones, and contamination. I buy organic and 100% grassfed beef when I can find it and afford it to get the cleanest beef possible.
Another great keto item at Whole Foods I buy all the time is organic chicken thighs. I like the organic Whole Foods 365 brand in the 3 pack.
Quick tip: these 3 packs is that I really like is they thaw out faster than the chicken that comes in the regular packaging. I cut these up individually. I put them in the freezer, they last for a long time. That’s an added bonus as well.
Get organic chicken thighs when you can find them and afford them because conventional chickens are grown in cramped barns full of harmful bacteria, pumped full of antibiotics, and low-quality feed.
Also, I recommend the thighs instead of the chicken breast because they actually have more fat in them which makes them more keto-friendly and they taste better too!
Keto chicken stir-fry is one of my favorite recipes I use these organic chicken thighs for. You can also make chicken nuggets your kids will love that are keto-friendly.
There are just a bunch of keto-friendly recipes you can make with organic chicken thighs and they are very affordable.
Organic bacon is one of my favorite keto items at Whole Foods under their 365 brand and one of the most popular items in the keto community love is bacon! I eat bacon with my eggs in the morning all the time.
It’s very important you get certified organic bacon if you can find it and afford it because conventional pork grown is one of the most contaminated meats in America.
The reason bacon is so delicious is because of the high fat content.
Conventionally grown pigs in the United States are fed a lot of moldy bread, expired food, and that type of stuff to lower feed costs and put fat on the pigs faster.
Fat is also the place where pigs (and humans) store all of the harmful chemicals, hormones, and other contaminants as a natural self-defense mechanism. When we eat the fat from these conventionally raised animals we absorb these contaminants which cause inflammation in your body along with an influx of hormones you don’t want.
This is why I highly recommend Certified Organic bacon if you can afford it.
Why only certified organic? There are now a number of different claims like “all-natural”, “pasture-raised”, “heritage pork” and others that cause confusion. I don’t trust any of these claims because they don’t have a standard definition or organization verifies these claims.
Another one of the best keto items at Whole Foods is the avocados. They are super healthy and a great natural source of electrolytes like magnesium that will help you avoid the keto flu.
There are lots of different ways you can make avocados. I use them as a simple snack by just adding some Himalayan salt to them.
Buying conventional avocados instead of organic is a great way to save some money on your grocery bill.
This is one case where you can go with the conventional instead of the organic. You don’t have to worry about the herbicides and pesticides in conventional avocados because they are protected by the outer layer of skin that we don’t eat.
The next keto item at Whole Foods I recommend is blueberries. They are one of a few keto-friendly fruits and full of antioxidants.
I love fresh wild blueberries when they are in season, but they have a fairly short season you can buy them fresh at the store or farmers market.
Sadly, when blueberries are not in season, they are picked before they are ripe, stored in a warehouse for months, shipped across the country, and then artificially riped with acetylene gas.
One simple trick is to buy them frozen. Frozen blueberries are picked ripe and then flash-frozen without any additional natural or artificial preservatives.
Blueberries are one of the EWG’s dirty dozen fruits and vegetables that contain the most herbicides and pesticides so you should buy organic blueberries if you can afford them.
For the next keto item at Whole Foods I recommend we’re headed to the freezer aisle.
We love to talk about bacon in the keto community, but vegetables are also a super important part of a healthy keto lifestyle too! They have lots of different vitamins and minerals we need.
Cauliflower is one of my favorites. I use it to make cauliflower mash which is my keto-friendly alternative to potatoes. It very easy to make and it goes great with beef or chicken stir-fry.
You can also buy “riced” cauliflower that you just have to warm up as an easy keto-friendly alternative to regular rice.
Cauliflower is a part of the EWG’s clean 15 so it doesn’t use many herbicides or pesticides when it’s grown conventionally so don’t need to buy organic cauliflower.
The last keto item at Whole Foods I recommend is broccoli. It’s another great keto-friendly vegetable with lots of vitamins and minerals we need.
Broccoli is the perfect side for steak. A couple of minutes in the microwave and it’s ready to go. This makes it super easy. I also use it in a number of the different keto stir fry recipes I like.
It’s also a part of the EWG’s clean 15 so you can buy conventional broccoli and save some money.
